Death Map
Watch deaths worldwide on the live Death Map. Our interactive map flashes in real-time, lighting up each country as a new death happens.
About Death Map
Through this map, we hope to offer a unique perspective to understand and observe the cycle of life around the globe. It is not a cold list of data, but rather an experience that treats each life's passing as a quiet pulse on our planet. By illuminating countries in real-time, we aim to transform complex mortality statistics into a serene and thought-provoking visual experience.
To achieve this, every flash on the map is based on authentic global population and annual mortality rate data. Our system continuously calculates the probability of a farewell occurring somewhere in the world at any given second, which in turn drives the real-time visualization you see.
How It Works
When you visit the Death Map, the information is presented in two main ways:
- The Interactive World Map: The entire globe is displayed. When our simulation registers a passing, the country where it occurred instantly lights up with a gentle pulse. This provides a visual marker indicating where a life has ended.
- The Live Country List: Next to the map, a list shows all countries that have experienced a passing since you arrived. Each time a country on the map lights up, its count on the list increases by one. Countries with a count of zero are kept hidden to help focus on current activity.
Death Rate
The death rate, more formally known as the crude death rate, is a fundamental measure used to determine a country's mortality. It represents the total number of deaths for every 1,000 people in a population over a one-year period. This metric provides a snapshot of how quickly a population is shrinking through deaths.
The formula to calculate the death rate is:
(Number of Deaths / Total Population) x 1,000
To power the Death Map, we utilize death rate and population data from World Bank Group, Our World in Data and World Population Review, which are trusted scientific publications that make global data and research accessible to everyone.
How We Calculate Death Rate
To determine the frequency of deaths in each country, we use a straightforward calculation based on its total population and crude death rate. The crude death rate is the number of deaths per 1,000 people in a given year.
Deaths Per Year
The annual number of deaths for a country is calculated with the following formula:
(Total Population / 1,000) x Crude Death Rate
This provides an estimate of the total number of deaths in a country over a one-year period.
Deaths Per Second
To power the Death Map, we convert the annual figure into deaths per second using this formula:
Deaths per Year / (365 days * 24 hours * 60 minutes * 60 seconds)
This calculation gives us the probability of a death occurring in any given second, which drives the live visualization on the Death Map.
Examples
Here are a few examples based on recent data:
- China: China's 2025 population is estimated at 1,416,100,000, with a crude death rate of 8.213 per 1,000. This results in roughly 11,630,430 deaths annually, or about 0.3687985159817352 deaths per second.
- India: With an estimated 2025 population of 1,463,870,000 and a crude death rate of about 6.611 per 1,000 people, India has approximately 9,677,645 deaths per year. This translates to about 0.30687610984271946 deaths every second.
- United States: With a 2025 population of around 347,276,000 and a crude death rate of approximately 8.663 per 1,000, United States experiences about 3,008,452 deaths per year. This is equivalent to roughly 0.09539738711314054 deaths every second.
Therefore, you should see the number of deaths per minute in India, China and United States as approximately 18.413, 22.128, and 5.724 respectively. If data on other websites differs significantly, it may be due to different data sources or calculation methods.
