About Baby Map
Baby Map (babymap.org) is a professional, first-of-its-kind web tool dedicated to visualizing the rhythm of human life across the globe. We provide a dynamic and intuitive platform that tracks global birth rates in real-time, transforming complex demographic data into an engaging and easy-to-understand experience.
At the heart of our platform is a powerful simulation. Using up-to-date population figures and annual birth rates (births per 1,000 people) for every country, our algorithm calculates the precise probability of a birth occurring anywhere in the world, every single second.
How It Works
When you open Baby Map, you are greeted with a clean interface composed of two main elements:
- The Interactive World Map: The entire globe is displayed. When our simulation registers a new birth, the corresponding country instantly lights up with a gentle pulse, providing a stunning visual representation of where new life is beginning.
- The Live Country List: Alongside the map, a dynamic list displays all countries that have experienced a birth since your session began. Each time a country on the map lights up, its counter in the list increments by one. Countries with zero births remain hidden to keep the focus on current activity.
Birth Rate
The birth rate, more formally known as the crude birth rate, is a fundamental measure used to determine a country's fertility. It represents the total number of live births for every 1,000 people in a population over a one-year period. This metric provides a snapshot of how quickly a population is growing through new births.
The formula to calculate the birth rate is:
(Number of Live Births / Total Population) x 1,000
To power our Baby Map, we utilize birth rate and population data from World Bank Group, Our World in Data and World Population Review, which are trusted scientific publications that make global data and research accessible to everyone.
How We Calculate Birth Rate
To determine the frequency of births in each country, we use a straightforward calculation based on its total population and crude birth rate. The crude birth rate is the number of live births per 1,000 people in a given year.
Births Per Year
The annual number of live births for a country is calculated with the following formula:
(Total Population / 1,000) x Crude Birth Rate
This provides an estimate of the total number of new lives beginning in a country over a one-year period.
Births Per Second
To power our real-time map, we convert the annual figure into births per second using this formula:
Births per Year / (365 days * 24 hours * 60 minutes * 60 seconds)
This calculation gives us the probability of a birth occurring in any given second, which drives the live visualization on the Baby Map.
Examples
Here are a few examples based on recent data:
- India: With an estimated 2025 population of 1,463,870,000 and a crude birth rate of about 16.146 per 1,000 people, India has approximately 23,635,646 births per year. This translates to about 0.7494814180618975 births every second.
- China: China's 2025 population is estimated at 1,416,100,000, with a crude birth rate of 6.256 per 1,000. This results in roughly 8,859,122 births annually, or about 0.28092091577879247 births per second.
- Nigeria: With a 2025 population of around 237,528,000 and a crude birth rate of approximately 32.954 per 1,000, Nigeria experiences about 7,827,498 births per year. This is equivalent to roughly 0.24820833333333334 births every second.
Therefore, whether on our website Baby Map or other websites, you should see the population born per minute in India, China and Nigeria as 44.969, 16.855 and 14.893 respectively. If it is not this data, it may be that the data source or calculation formula is wrong.
